Alan Bates was an English actor.

Biography[]

Born in Allestree, Derbyshire, Bates showed an interest in acting from age eleven and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. He made his stage debut in 1955 and soon became a star originating the role of Cliff in Look Back in Anger. He made his film debut in The Entertainer several years later and gained an Academy Award nomination for his role in The Fixer.

Bates continued to balance his career with film, stage and television appearances, with roles including Claudius in the 1990 version of Hamlet and Jennings the butler in Gosford Park. He was knighted for his services to acting in 2003, and passed away later that same year.

Singing[]

In his long career, Bates sang a few times, performing a brief duet in The Entertainer with Joan Plowright. He also sang the standard "Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes" in The Go-Between, and briefly performed "Early One Morning" in the 1978 adaptation of The Mayor of Casterbridge, his self-confessed favourite role.
