Born Benedict Greenwood in Windsor, Berkshire, Chaplin studied at Guildhall School of Music and Drama and had small roles in films such as The Remains of the Day and Feast of July as well as being critically praised for his role on stage in The Glass Menagerie. In 1995 he played Matthew Malone in the first series of sitcom Game On.

Chaplin went on to be cast in larger film productions such as The Truth About Cats and Dogs, Chromophobia and Two Weeks. He also had supporting roles in Water Horse: Legend of the Deep and Cinderella and received a Tony Award nomination for his role in The Retreat From Moscow.

Chaplin sang in his final episode of Game On, performing (and later sobbing his way through) a rendition of "Bread and Butter", a song written by his character's new band. He also sang a comic song in the television film The Wipers Time, in which he played wartime satirist Captain Fred Roberts.
