Brenda Blethyn is an English actress.


Born in Ramsgate, Kent, Blethyn studied at the Guildford School of Acting and made her stage debut with the Royal National Theatre in 1976. She gained acclaim for her performances in Steaming and Benefactors and would go on to appear in several Shakesperian roles before making more film and television focused roles.

Early film roles would include The Witches and A River Runs Through It as well as Academy Award nominated turns for Secrets & Lies and Little Voice. Later, Blethyn would perform frequently in costume dramas including Pride and Prejudice and Atonement. On television she became best known for a long-running turn as the title character in Vera.


Blethyn gave two singing performances, singing "The Nutbush City Limits" in Introducing the Dwights and several songs as Ma Heffalump in Tigger & Pooh and a Musical Too.
