Ciarán Hinds is an Irish actor.
Born in Belfast, Hinds studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company during the 1990s. Gaining success on stage with Closer, he made his film debut in Excalibur in 1981.
Globally recognised as a solid character actor, Hinds appeared in numerous blockbusters such as the Harry Potter series and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy as well as more character driven pieces such as Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day. Hinds has also been a familar face on television, notably playing Gaius Julius Caesar in Rome.
Despite his claim that he was unable to sing, Hinds took the role of Richard Firmin, the co-owner of the Opera Populaire, in The Phantom of the Opera. Until very close to the filming dates, Hinds and Simon Callow were unsure which of the two managers they would be playing.
Prior to this, Hinds had appeared as presidential would-be assassin Samuel Byck in the original London production of Assassins.
