Thewlis gave his first major film role in Naked and proceeded to make a number of feature film appearances, including playing the antagonist in Dragonheart and gaining a British Independent Film Award for Divorcing Jack.

In 2004 he was cast as Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter series, his most lucrative film role. He also gained positive acclaim for his role in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and as a director for Hello, Hello, Hello.
