Richard Roxburgh is an Australian actor.

Biography[]

Born in Albury, New South Wales, Roxburgh studied at the National Institute of Dramatics and worked with the Sydney Theatre Company before gaining attention as Roger Rogerson in Blue Murder. He was a succesful stage actor in Australia (particularly memorable for his titular role in Hamlet), before major international roles in Mission Impossible II and Moulin Rouge!

Roxburgh soon became known for his roles as villainous characters such as M in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Count Dracula in Van Helsing. He also appeared in succesful stage productions of Uncle Vanya, Waiting for Godot and Cyrano de Bergerac as well as directing the succesful film Romulus, My Father.

As The Duke in Moulin Rouge!, Roxburgh sang several numbers, notably a comic version of "Like a Virgin."
