Topol is an Israeli actor.
Biography[]
Born Chaim Topol in Tel Aviv, Israeli, he began his acting career appearing in stage productions put on by the Israeli Army and later by his own troupe, before his film debut in 1961's I Like Mike. He was critically acclaimed for his role in Sallah and soon made his English language debut in 1966.
Topol gained his greatest recognition in the role of Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, and would later make appearances in such films as Flash Gordon, For Your Eyes Only and Left Luggage.
Singing[]
Topol was a popular performer on stage, frequently appearing as Tevye the Dairyman in Fiddler on the Roof, including in the 1971film version. He also played Amiable the baker in The Baker's Wife (before being replaced on the road), Ziegfeld in Ziegfeld and Honoré Lachaille in Gigi.
As well as his stage appearances, Topol also appeared in Sallah as the titular character, and The Going Up of David Lev, where he sang two traditional Jewish songs.
