Glynis Johns is a South African born British actress.


Born in Pretoria, South Africa whilst her parents were on tour, she began a career on the stage from a young age; as a child ballerina at the Garrick in 1935 and soon made her film debut, one of her earliest roles being opposite her father Mervyn. By the 1950s, she was voted the tenth most popular box office star in Britain.

Johns soon moved to Hollywood, where she continued to be succesful, in The Court Jester and in an Academy Award nominated turn for The Sundowners. Additionally, Johns continued her stage career, gaining a Tony Award for her role in A Little Night Music and starring in a the sitcom Coming of Age. Her final film role came in 1999, before she retired.


Despite being considered a non-singer, Johns sang in a number of roles, most famously as Winifred Banks in Mary Poppins, in which her character demonstrates her devotion to the women's rights movement with "Sister Suffragette" and as Desiree Armfeldt in A Little Night Music, a role she originated.
