Ingrid Bergman was a Swedish actress.

Biography[]

Born in Stockholm, Sweden, she studied at the Royal Dramatic Theatre School and made her first film appearance aged 19. She appeared in several films in Europe including Intermezzo, which was remade in the United States with Bergman reprising the role. This led to her becoming recognised an actress in English-speaking films.

Bergman soon appeared as Ilsa Lund in Casablanca, followed soon after by For Whom the Bell Tolls and Gaslight, which earned her first an Academy Award nomination and victory respectively. She also had successful periods working with Roberto Rossellini and Alfred Hitchcock respectively and made her final screen appearance in the award winning television drama A Woman Called Golda.

Bergman passed away in 1982.
