Joaquin Phoenix is a Puerto Rican born American actor.


Born Joaquin Bottom in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, he became performing as a child along with his siblings, appearing in such films as Parenthood under the name "Leaf Phoenix". As he grew older he became publicly acclaimed for his roles in To Die For, Quills and Gladiator (for which he received an Academy Award nomination) among others.

In 2005, Phoenix acheived success for his leading role in Walk the Line. He retired from acting as part of the mockumentary I'm Still Here, but later returned for The Master (receiving a third Academy Award nomination) and Inherent Vice.


Phoenix notably sang in his Academy Award nominated role as Johnny Cash, performing such hits as "Ring of Fire" and "Folsom Prison Blues." He also sang/rapped in the documentary I'm Still Here and the romantic film Her.
