Maggie Gyllenhaal is an American actress.
Born Margalit Gyllenhaal in New York City, New York to a family of filmmakers, she made her debut in 1992's Waterland (directed by her father), appeared in theatrical productions including Closer and The Tempest and first gained major recognition appearing opposite her brother Jake in Donnie Darko. However, she would gain her first starring role in the black sex comedy Secretary.
Gyllenhaal appeared in a mixture of comedies and indie films, including Stranger Than Fiction and Crazy Heart (which earned her a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nomination), as well as blockbusters such as The Dark Knight, in which she took over the role of Rachel Dawes. She also continued her stage career playing the role of Yelena in a 2009 production of Uncle Vanya on Broadway.
Gyllenhaal sang in three of her film roles; firstly and most notably as Jude in Happy Endings, singing such songs as "How Lucky Am I" and "Just the Way You Are." She also performed both in the drama Sherrybaby and the musical film Frank.
