Nigel Bruce was a Mexican born British actor.

Born in Ensenada, Baja California, Bruce served in the First World War before making his stage acting debut in 1920 with Why Marry? His success onstage led to him becoming a screen actor, appearing in such films as Treasure Island, Charge of the Light Brigade and Rebecca, typically as a well-meaning buffoon.

In 1939, Bruce would first play the role for which he became best known for, that of Dr. John Watson in a series of films and radio programmes based on the Sherlock Holmes books.

Bruce passed away in 1953.

Bruce sang briefly in two of his films; singing several traditional tunes in Jalna and "Loch Lomond" in the Sherlock Holmes installment Pursuit to Algiers.
