Richard Armitage is an English actor.
Born in Huncote, Leicester, he studied at Pattison College and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts before appearing in productions of Macbeth and Hamlet among others. He began to acheive wider recognition following a leading role as John Thornton in North & South, and as the villain Guy of Gisbourne in Robin Hood.
Armitage gained international acclaim playing the exiled dwarf King Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit trilogy, leading to a wider variety of roles, including a serial killer in Hannibal and the tragic lead John Proctor in The Crucible.
Initially a musical theatre performer, Armitage appeared in such productions as 42nd Street and Cats. Onscreen, he only performed one singing role, performing "Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold" in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
