Roddy McDowall was an English actor.
Born in Herne Hill, London, McDowall was a child model and then an actor, making his first major film appearance at the age of 10. Upon moving to America, he was cast in How Green Was My Valley, which led to international recognition. McDowall acheived the rare feat of managing the transition from child to adult star, appearing in stage productions such as Orson Welles' Macbeth and the original production of Camelot.
A distinguished character actor, McDowall became particularly well known for his appearances in the Planet of the Apes films, as well as acclaimed performances in films such as Cleopatra and It! and television roles such as the Mad Hatter in Batman. He was also a sought after photographer, and in later years a voice artist. McDowall passed away in 1998.
In his long career, McDowall had a handful of singing roles on film, beginning with that of Ariel in The Tempest, and a solo in The Cool Ones; "Where Did I Wrong?". In the animated adaptation of The Wind in the Willows, he had a number of songs, including the solo "Messing Around in Boats". He also originated the role of Mordred in the musical Camelot.
