Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, Skarsgård was already a popular and prolific stage and television when he reached his mid-twenties, and worked with some of the best known Scandinavian directors, including Lars Von Trier and Hans Petter Moland, a personal friend.

Skarsgård appeared in his first English language film in 1985 and his most notable early role was as the Soviet submarine commander in The Hunt for Red October. He subsequently became well known across the world for his appearances in blockbuster series such as Pirates of the Caribbean and the Marvel Comic superhero series.

Skarsgård has only one singing role to his name, as Bill Anderson in the film Mamma Mia! He confessed he didn't think he could sing but upon learning the project in question, signed up immediately.
