Stratford Johns was a South African actor.


Born in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, Johns emigrated to Britain in 1948 and began working in repertory theatre. He made his film debut in 1955 but became notable upon being cast as Barlow in Z-Cars, a character he reprised in numerous spin offs.

Johns was a prominent character actor also, and appeared in The Avengers, Doctor Who, and in the major role of Magwitch in a BBC adaptation of Great Expectations. As well as acting, he also wrote the children's book Gumphlumph, which he read on Jackanory.

Johns passed away in 2002.
